Street Marker Painting
Thanks to our volunteer effort the stenciling of the neighborhood street markers is almost complete. There are only seven outstanding markers left to be stenciled. These should be completed by the fall. Chris Shoemaker is looking for volunteers to help stencils the last remaining street markers.
McClelland Park
Levi Lovett, one of the park commissioners for the district, said public workshops and communication among the citizens has really improved the neighborhood.
A backdrop for the HNA 2008 picnic was a new construction project that would provide local children with a riverboat theme playground.
“What is really great about this project is that the community was very supportive and involved in the planning of the park,” said Jim McClelland, the director/secretary of the Greater Huntington Parks District.
Trash Can
Vice President Simone Kompanek is researching the cost of neighborhood trash cans to address excess litter at bus stops. Currently, TTA neither allows food or drink on the buses, nor provides a way to dispose waste. Richard Cobb is simultaneously meeting with TTA. Without sponsorship dollars, the project could cost up to $40,000.
Enslow Middle School
The consolidation of Enslow and Beverly Hills Middle Schools was voted as a top issue by the HNA organization. Susan Gillette is looking for volunteers to help pass out petitions and collect signatures. Anyone interested should contact Susan.
On a different front, Karen Nance is a historic building advocate that is having a meeting March 7th at the Carroll Miller House at 2pm. This meeting is for people interested in stopping the school board from taking the Prestera property and tearing down the Historic WV Colored Children’s Home. If you missed previous meets you can read about them on the Herald Dispatch.
There is a blog that is talking about schools in Huntington. Additional information can be found on Huntington Essential School Blog.
Merrill Park
Thanks to the Park Board, Merrill Park is off and running. We just had delivered a new trash can which is alleviating a lot of the clutter that has been accumulating in the neighborhood park. The park board also dropped off a new picnic table. In conjunction with the HNA the Parks and Recreation Board there is tentatively scheduled cleanup for the park once the weather is nicer. Plans to refurbish the generous Marshall Class of 1900’s class gift of park benches is on its way as well. Also a public meeting is being scheduled to see the final development plans for the park.
